Product Description
Aprilaire humidifiers provide maximum comfort throughout your entire home - every hour, every day, all season long, without the mess and inconvenience of portables. Heating your indoor air dries out your skin. This not only makes you feel itchy but can also make you feel chilly. This cold effect is not the only discomfort caused by too dry air. Annoying static electricity is another indication of low humidity levels. Proper relative humidity (rh) will reduce this discomfort.

For those people who don't think this unit comes with a template; it's not well marked, but the actual instruction sheet is the template. If you trace around the outside of this sheet and cut just inside the lines, you will have a perfect hole. It is extremely important to make sure you have the unit mounted perfectly level in order to have the water panel becoming evenly saturated. The materials I needed in order to complete this install were:
- Sheet Metal Snips, drill with a 5/16" hex bit for screwing sheet metal screws in and 3/4" spade bit for drilling the hole for humidistat controller and transformer
- Foil Tape (to seal the joints), ($15)
- Fireblock Caulk (to seal the ducts to the unit, and the 6" duct to the main duct), ($6)
- 24" length Round Duct with 6" diameter ($8)
- 10ft 1/2" ID vinyl tubing for the water drain ($5)
- 10ft 1/4" copper tubing for water supply ($10)
- 8" zipties ($3)
- Wire nuts ($4)
- 25 1" #10 self tapping sheet metal screws ($3)
- 50ft 18/2 thermostat wire for outdoor temp sensor and wiring solenoid to controller ($8)
- 25ft 18/5 thermostat wire for wiring controller to the furnace board ($9)
- 2 x 90° 6" round metal duct elbows ($16)
- 1 x 6" round metal duct coupler (has tabs to hold it to the flat duct and makes it easy to fit your elbow into the duct) ($5)
So all told, if you already have the tools this will run you roughly $90 in materials on top of the price of this unit. If I had known this information beforehand, it would have saved me a considerable amount of money. They do sell a kit for $100 with shipping on amazon, but you might not have enough wire or sheet metal screws, and wouldn't get the foil tape or special high temp caulk from what I've read.
I shopped around for a while, read reviews on all the major brands of whole house humidifiers and landed on this one. Seemed to be the best for the money and possible for a do-it-yourselfer like me to install without too much headache.
The install went fairly smoothly. If you read the directions and check out how your heater is set up it can be installed without too much problem. Assuming you aren't just replacing an existing unit, you will need to be able to cut into the existing duct work coming out of your furnace. I used an angle grinder to do the cutting, but you could probably make due with a dremel tool and a carbon fiber cutting disc if you had to as it's just a small hole.
Plan on making a few trips to the hardware store as there are a lot of parts that you'll need (reviewer "philly rob" had a list of what he used, and yours will probably be similar).
The wiring wasn't bad, most of the time was spent just snaking the wires around so they looked nice and neat. Make sure to save yourself some trouble and mark all the wires ahead of time so you don't lose track of which one goes to which one. The roughest part of the wiring for me was finding a good place to get the temperature cable outside where it wouldn't be in direct sunlight or get buried by snow. Obviously depending on the set up of your house that could be very difficult or very easy.
Now that it's all up and running, the house is very comfortable. I had read previously that it can take a few days to a week for you to really notice it as a lot of the dry things in your home suck up the initial moisture (i.e. hardwood floors, walls). It took about a week for it to get to the point where it was working at what turned out to be "normal" in the future. After that I just fidgeted with the dial here and there to get the humidity exactly as I wanted it.
All in all I'd highly recommend this humidifier. My house is comfortable in the winter and actually feels a lot warmer then before when the air was dry. I think that's probably saved us money on our heating bills as we don't have to have the temperature so high to feel comfortable anymore.
The humidifier itself is typical for a plate/pad-type. Quality seems good but since my air handler is in an attic I was disappointed in how much air leaked from the housing and was lost into the cold attic. Since the pad only needs to be changed every year or so, I just taped up the leaky seams with foil tape to keep leakage down. The winter/summer damper also lets a lot of air by-pass it when in summer mode; there is about 1/4" clearance between the damper disk and housing with the damper closed. Again this is typical of what is found on consumer-grade humidifiers.
Others have complained that the 24V transformer for the humidifier's solenoid valve is cheap/weak. After seeing that I was careful tightening the low voltage terminals and had no problems with it.
