The neighborhood cats were using my lawn and garden as their personal litter box. This infuriated me. I didn't know what to do to get rid of them. I tried using a foul smelling spray to keep the cats way, but the deposit from the local cat that I found in my garden the day after I sprayed told me I needed to try something else. I surfed the Net and discovered the Scarecrow.
Does it work? Let me put it this way: the next morning after I installed the Scarecrow, I heard it activate. I quickly looked out my window to see a cat scurry across my yard like a bolt of lightning. The Scarecrow had definately done its job. I continue to hear the Scarecrow activate intermittently against all types of animal intruders, protecting my garden from all who threaten it. I'm impressed.
Are there problems with the Scarecrow sprinkler system? Sure, but they're minor.
First, it is difficult to control the distance water is sprayed. I live in the city and I have to be very careful how I position the unit. It just misses spraying into my neighbor's yard. The unit will activate when my neighbor is close to his fence and sends a jet of water his way which just misses him. That can be quite threatening to a friendly neighbor. Fortunately, I took the time to explain my problem and the Scarecrow to my neighbor. He understands my situation and is not bothered too much by the Scarecrow attacks.
Second, you can't control the range of the Scarecrow sensor to any great degree. The sensor covers a range. You can't adjust the sensor to cover say an area only 10ft long and nothing more. Hence, the problem mentioned previously with my neighbor comming too close to the fense and activating the sensor.
Third, the unit is made entirely of plastic. What more needs to be said of plastic.
Fourth, the unit leaks water where the hose connects into it. You will need to use Pipe Joint on the hose threads to stop the leak. Make sure you buy the Pipe Joint made for plastic pipes and hose.
Fifth and finally, the Scarecrow ties up your hose and water supply. I solved this problem quickly and easily by buying a quick-change hose adapter. This allows me to disconnect the hose from my Scarecrow and connect the hose to whatever accessory I may need. For instance, I'll disconnect the hose from the Scarecrow and reconnect the hose to my sprinkler using the quick release and then water my lawn. I'll just as easily disconnect the hose from the sprinkler and reconnect it to the Scarecrow. All within a second or two. It's very easy.
The problems that I've mentioned may sound major, but they really aren't. They are simple minor issues to be dealt with. Cats deficating in my garden was a much more tramatic issue for me. Not knowing what to do to humanely stop the cats made the trama even worse. The Scarecrow solves that problem nicely for me.
Take a chance on the Scarecrow. I highly recommend it.
My neighbor feeds all the stray cats in the neighborhood. Because of this we now have about 20 cats hanging around on any given day. When I get home from work there are cats on my porch, roof, truck, front garden, fence and just everywhere. My front porch is starting to smell like cat spray.
They wake us up at night with there mating calls and we have had enough, so 11 months ago I bought a Scarecrow with high hopes that my "cat sniper" would solve all our problems.
I was as excited as a kid at Christmas when we got this thing. Anyway hooked it up and started to play.
The motion sensor is hit and miss. It is accurate about 90% of the time but sometimes I can walk right in front of it or even walk up to it and wave my arm and nothing happens. That being said, it got rid of the cats in my front garden area instantly. They learned quickly to run for their lives.
The battery life is not great but okay. You will have to replace it about every 1 - 3 months.
My problems with the unit.
1) battery life
2) motion sensor not 100%
3) It did not last very long.
I purchased in April of 2013 and used it till about July. By that time the cats had stopped coming into the yard. Then winter came around and so it was not used at all. Yesterday (May 31st) I went and hooked it up again because all the cats are back making their noises by my bedroom window. When I hooked it up it was leaking. It does not completely shut off but water continuously comes out of the spray nozzle.
It has a 2 year warantee but broke with only about 3.5 months of use. I called Contech during business hours and got voice mail stating no one was there but that they would call me back. I called a second time and this time selected the option for the sales department. Again got voice-mail stating no one was there.
(update 04/11/14 - I have called Contech 9 times, left messages 4 times, in the last message I stated that I had called 9 times and left messages 4 times. Still no call back and no response. WHATS THE POINT IN A WARANTEE IF THE COMPANY WON'T SUPPORT IT? If you buy this product just expect to have to buy another one in less than a year because it is just not built to last.)
A company of this size doesn't have anyone there at 10AM on a Tuesday?
I'll update this post if they ever call me back and I'll increase the star rating if they replace or repair the unit I have but I can't give great review to a product that only lasts for 3.5 months of work.
